Mike Duckering was born in 1944 in Nottingham, eldest son of an engineer, amateur artist and would be architect. Mike studied architecture at the University of Bath under the late Professor Ken Smithies, a renowned pioneer of modern architectural design theory. After many years working as an architect in Bristol - making art in his spare time - he gained a BA Fine Art Degree at the University of Gloucestershire. Mike now lives and works in Cheltenham, where he is a member of the Cheltenham Group of Artists. His work has been exhibited and sold at a number of galleries and exhibitions, including Hadfield Fine Art in Gloucestershire, www.hadfieldfineart.co.uk
The experience of places visited accumulate within the subconscious; and although my work is based mostly on direct observation of landscape, architecture and people, it is permeated by these undercurrents of past memory. I like to use bold mark-making to capture the ethos of places, rather than the reality, sometimes experimenting with other media to make partially abstracted compositions. Moving away from the constraints of representation gives greater freedom of expression, and allows the viewer to impart his or her own interpretation on my work.
